Mike Ranelli is a professional percussionist located in the Millersville, MD (in Anne Arundel county, convenient to Washington DC and Baltimore.) A versatile musician, Mike is available to perform and teach all styles of music in all areas of percussion, including timpani, drumset, mallet and concert instruments.

Percussion and Timpani
Mike Ranelli is active as a freelance percussionist in the Washington, DC area and throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. He performs professionally with numerous orchestras, including the National Symphony Orchestra, the Richmond Symphony and the Annapolis Symphony, as well as the National Philharmonic, Maryland Symphony, Fairfax Symphony, Roanoke Symphony, and the Prince William Symphony.
Mike is regularly engaged as timpanist with the acclaimed Eclipse Chamber Orchestra,
an ensemble comprised mainly of National Symphony Orchestra members. Some of his ECO performances have been broadcast on American Public Media's "Performance Today" program.
Mike has performed for numerous opera companies, including the Baltimore Opera, Virginia Opera, Opera Roanoke and the Annapolis Opera. He also performs each summer with the Chesapeake Orchestra at the St. Mary's River Concert Series.
Mike has performed with the national touring production of the hit Broadway musical, The Producers, and in various theatrical productions at the Olney Theatre, Bethesda Summer Music Festival and the Young Victorian Theatre Company. He also performs at many churches throughout the DC metro area, and has appeared with choral groups such as the Cantate Chamber Choir, Annapolis Chorale and the World Bank/IMF Choral Society. He frequently records symphonic band music for the Alfred, FJH and C.L. Barnhouse music publishing companies.
Prior to coming to the DC area in 2004, Mike lived in Southwest Virginia, where he was principal percussionist of the Lynchburg Symphony and also performed regularly with orchestras of Richmond, Roanoke, Greensboro, Winston-Salem and Kingsport. He appeared with the Mill Mountain Theatre, Opera Roanoke, the Jefferson Choral Society, many churches, and popular southwest Virginia jazz artists.
In addition to performing, Mike is also an active teacher and clinician. He maintains a private studio in Millersville, MD, and is currently the marching percussion instructor at Annapolis Area Christian school, Good Counsel High School and Northwood High School.
Mike has taught private lessons and percussion pedagogy at the college level, having served on the faculty of Roanoke College, Lynchburg College, Liberty University and Radford University. He has given clinics at colleges and high schools in Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia, and appeared as a clinician at the 2004 VA/DC Percussive Arts Society Day of Percussion and 2007 MD/DE PAS Day of Percussion.
Mike is a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, where he served as Principal Percussionist of the Eastman Wind Ensemble under Donald Hunsberger, and performed professionally with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. He is a member of the Vic Firth Education Team and serves as Treasurer of the Maryland/Delaware Chapter of the Percussive Arts Society.
